I've always loved raw, industrial spaces, and so it came to pass that Nerve Up<\/em>\u00a0was recorded in a damp, freezing \u2018Satanic\u2019 mill in Miles Platting, a then run-down area of East Manchester, in a room purpose-built using breezeblocks and salvaged scrap. A crazy endeavour - but a story, and a recording - which only increases in magic over the years.<\/p> <\/p> I started writing these songs using pretty much just a simple drum machine, keyboard and my Telecaster. This small armoury of tools instilled a love of the economical, the stripped, the stark, the trebly and harsh. I wanted Nerve Up to crackle with urgency and clarity, while retaining the intimacy of a home-recording.<\/p> <\/p> When I look at the album cover and inlay sleeve, I am transported back in time to that shadowy, crumbling mill - I can almost smell the damp canal; I shiver once more in that chill, empty building with its long, cold corridors..<\/p> <\/p> The inlay sleeve shows fragments of the mill interior from these recording sessions, but the photo on the front cover was in fact taken in a flat in Whalley Range.
