(Manic Pop Thrills)<\/em><\/p> <\/p> A palette of scratchy atmospherics, bright pop traces and 70s funk economy, refracted through a cement-coloured North of England lens: I wrote and recorded Hinterland<\/em>\u00a0in my tiny bedroom home studio in the Manchester towerblock I'd lived since I was 20. Using an 8-Track Tascam cassette recorder, and a laptop with Garageband, I built up the layered sonic worlds of Hinterland.<\/p> <\/p> A lot more colour had infiltrated my sound world by this point. I was into propulsive machine beats, creating a spine of patterns and grooves to embellish with a kaleidoscope of arrangements - scratchy rhythmic guitar, cello, keyboards, electronic percussion (LOTS of this), smears of FX unit atmospherics, and more. Echoes of Rufus, Michael Jackson, Voodoo Ray and ESG haunt its edges.<\/p> <\/p> During the writing of Hinterland I found myself repeatedly walking to the outskirts of the city; along canals, through industrial estates, mills and raggedy wastelands.This walking became a bit ritualistic. I was absorbing my every day environment, transforming the humble and derelict into something that had magic and meaning. It became a compulsive act and fed into my creative process.<\/p> Lyrically, Hinterland is obsessed by landscapes; impressions of Manchester wildernesses, childhood playspaces, adult wanderings, and interior psychological terrain.<\/p> <\/p> All 4 singles released off\u00a0Hinterland<\/em>\u00a0reached the A-Playlist on BBC 6Music and the album garnered a nomination for Best Breakthrough for South Bank Sky Arts Awards.<\/p> <\/p> On the album cover I stalk shaven-headed through a tangle of rubble and weeds, a patch of industrial scrubland near Strangeways prison in Manchester. I play all instruments on\u00a0Hinterland<\/em>\u00a0except real drums, which were played by Andrew Cheetham. The second part of the Hinterland story is my journey to another industrial heartland - Keyclub Recording Co. in Michigan - to add finishing touches and mix the album with engineer and producer Bill Skibbe (The Kills, Jack White). This was a whole adventure in itself! too long to tell here. Working with Bill at Keyclub the sound of Hinterland was elevated to another level, giving it vibrancy, power and analogue richness.<\/p>
